Twenty-two poses on the same hillside. The flat stare is still who he is — it is the first thing in the set and the one he goes back to — but a reply needs more than one face, so here is the rest of him: smug, furious, asleep, suspicious, and genuinely pleased to see you.

Thirty-two jobs he has no business holding. The first half keep the flat stare under the costume, which is funny once. The rest drop it: the firefighter is set, the farmer is laughing, the baker is yawning, the boxer is furious, and the postman has met the dog. Same cat, same collar, very different day.

The Avatars

Thirty-two built for the crop the rest of this page ignores. Every platform masks an avatar to a circle and shows it at about forty-eight pixels, so these are drawn for that: head centred with both ears well inside the circle, and the collar tag deliberately oversized so it still reads at thumbnail size. The first half are moods on one flat colour. The rest put him in a job, with the setting cut back to two or three flat shapes so it never competes with his face.

The name

Three letters doing three jobs. None of them were planned and all of them landed.

  1. 銀

    The metal

    銀 is gin, and it is silver. Not silver as a colour, silver as the thing in the ground. It is the same character that sits inside the Japanese word for bank, which is a joke we did not have to write.

  2. 猫

    The cat

    銀猫. Ginneko. Silver cat. He is pale, he glows, he is lit from inside rather than from anywhere in the scene, and he has never once looked like he wanted to be photographed.

  3. 杯

    The drink

    It is also a gin. That one was free and we took it. It is the third meaning and it is the least important one, which is exactly the right amount of joke to have hiding in a name.

The cat is paired with silver because the name already was. Everything else on this page is downstream of a three-letter coincidence.
